| HDL cholesterol | The "good" cholesterol. Transports cholesterol back to the liver. |
| LDL cholesterol | The "bad" cholesterol. Raised LDL is associated with a higher cardiovascular risk. |
| Triglycerides | Fat molecule; often raised with excess weight, a high sugar intake or alcohol. |
| Cholesterol/HDL ratio | The ratio between total cholesterol and HDL. Calculated from both values; often says more about your risk than a single value. |
| Non-HDL cholesterol | All cholesterol except HDL. Calculated from total cholesterol and HDL, and usable when you were not fasting. |

What does the difference between LDL and HDL tell me?
LDL ("bad") is linked to higher vascular risk, HDL ("good") to protection. The ratio between them says more than either value alone.
What can I do myself about raised cholesterol?
