Hormones5 biomarkers | |
|---|---|
| Testosterone (total) | The primary male sex hormone, total value in the blood. |
| Free testosterone | The biologically active fraction of testosterone, unbound to proteins. |
| SHBG | Protein that transports testosterone; partly determines the active fraction. |
| LH | Pituitary hormone that stimulates the testes to produce testosterone. |
| FSH | Pituitary hormone that plays a role in sperm production. |
Inflammation markers3 biomarkers | |
|---|---|
| CRP | Responds within hours; points to possible inflammatory activity. |
| ESR (sedimentation rate) | Responds more slowly than CRP and stays raised longer; complements CRP. |
| White cell differential | The split over neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils. |
Extra heart and vessels2 biomarkers | |
|---|---|
| Apolipoprotein B | The number of atherogenic particles; a fine-grained measure of your cardiovascular risk. |
| Lipoprotein(a) | A largely hereditary risk factor for cardiovascular disease, independent of your cholesterol. |

How long does it take to get my results?
Typically within 2 working days of your blood draw. Some vitamins and minerals take longer, these values are almost always available within 5 business days. You receive an email as soon as your report is ready.
Do I need to fast?
Yes, we advise fasting for 8 hours for the most reliable result, particularly for glucose and triglycerides.
Where can I have my blood drawn?
Bloodworks works with more than 1000 collection points across the Netherlands. You choose your location yourself after ordering.
Do I need a referral?
No, you can order directly without a referral from your GP.
Can I share my report with my GP?
Yes, your report is written in medical language and contains all relevant laboratory information. Many customers take it to a consultation.
Are the blood draw and collection costs included?
Yes. At Bloodworks you pay a one-off €29 in blood draw and collection costs per order, and from €225 that amount is waived. This value package is priced above that, so you pay nothing extra for the collection point or the blood draw. If you order only a smaller theme package or a single marker, the €29 is added.
What is the difference between the Male and the Female variant?
The hormone section differs per variant. For Male we measure testosterone (total and free), SHBG, LH and FSH. For Female we measure oestradiol, progesterone, FSH, LH and prolactin. All other biomarkers and the price are the same for both variants.
When and how should I have my blood drawn?
Preferably come in the morning, having fasted for 8 hours; fasting is needed for glucose and triglycerides. For the Male variant we advise a draw between 7 and 10 o'clock, when testosterone is at its highest and easiest to interpret. For the Female variant, day 3 to 5 of the cycle (counted from the first day of your period) is usual for most hormone measurements, preferably between 8 and 10 o'clock. For progesterone in the second half of the cycle, day 21 (or 7 days before your expected period) can be useful. In your report we give you the context for your values. Avoid hard exercise for 24 to 48 hours beforehand, as it can temporarily raise CRP and ESR.
What is the difference with Bloodworks Premium?
Platinum contains every biomarker in Bloodworks Premium and adds, in the same blood draw, the male or female hormone panel, CRP, ESR and the white cell differential as inflammation markers, and ApoB and Lp(a) for a finer picture of your cardiovascular risk. If you have no need for hormone testing, inflammation markers or ApoB and Lp(a), Premium is the right fit.
I do not have a regular cycle or I use hormones. Can I still order Platinum?
Yes. Without a regular cycle, for example around or after the menopause, you can have your blood drawn on any day. Hormonal contraception and testosterone or other hormone therapy affect the hormone values; the measurement then mainly reflects the effect of the medication. Let us know your situation and the doctor will tailor the interpretation to it.
Why are ApoB and Lp(a) included in Platinum?
ApoB counts the number of particles that carry cholesterol, rather than only the amount of cholesterol. Lp(a) is largely hereditary and can raise cardiovascular risk independently of your cholesterol; one measurement is usually enough. Together with the lipid profile they give a finer picture.
What do the inflammation markers tell me?
CRP responds within hours, ESR more slowly and stays raised for longer. Together they show whether there are signs of inflammatory activity right now. The white cell differential shows how your white blood cells are divided over the five types of immune cell; a normal total can hide an uneven split. A rise is often temporary, for example after an infection or hard exercise, and does not by itself reveal the cause; the doctor puts your result in context. Anti-inflammatory drugs such as NSAIDs and corticosteroids can lower CRP: please mention any medication.
Does Platinum rule out every condition?
No. Platinum gives a broad picture of the measured values in a single blood draw, reviewed by a doctor against the laboratory's reference values. It is a snapshot: conditions that these biomarkers do not show stay out of view, and a result within the reference values is no guarantee that you are healthy.
