Haemoglobin (Hb)
Oxygen-carrying protein; a low value can point to anaemia.
Why we measure this
Fatigue is the most commonly missed symptom of anaemia. A single Hb value gives immediate clarity, with no room for interpretation.
MCV
Average size of the red blood cells.
Why we measure this
MCV distinguishes the type of anaemia (iron deficiency versus B12/folate) and so directs the follow-up straight away.
Red blood cells
Number of red blood cells.
Why we measure this
Together with Hb and MCV, the red cell count gives a complete picture of the production and quality of your red blood cells.
Platelets
Blood platelets; involved in clotting.
Why we measure this
An abnormal platelet count can point to a clotting or bone marrow problem and is captured in a single measurement.

Calculated filtration capacity of the kidneys.

Waste product of purine metabolism; kidney and gout.
Why we measure this
Raised uric acid is linked to gout and kidney stones and is an independent risk factor for heart and kidney damage.

Sodium
Electrolyte; fluid balance, blood pressure and nerve function.
Why we measure this
Chronically low sodium quietly affects an estimated 5 to 10% of adults, including people without any symptoms.
Potassium
Electrolyte; heart conduction and muscle function.
Why we measure this
Potassium abnormalities, including those caused by diuretics or stomach protectors, cause no symptoms until they become serious.
Liver function7 biomarkers
Alkaline phosphatase (ALP)
Liver enzyme; also involved in bone metabolism.
Why we measure this
ALP can point to biliary, liver or bone problems. Reading it alongside the other liver values gives the doctor the right direction.
Gamma-GT (GGT)
Liver enzyme; sensitive to alcohol and liver strain.
Why we measure this
GGT is the first to rise with excessive alcohol use or liver strain, sometimes years before other values change.
AST
Liver enzyme; raised when liver cells are damaged.
Why we measure this
AST indicates active liver cell damage. The AST/ALT ratio helps us identify the type of liver condition.
ALT
Liver enzyme; raised in liver inflammation.
Why we measure this
ALT is liver-specific and rises with inflammation or damage. A raised ALT always calls for further assessment.
Bilirubin (total)
Breakdown product of haemoglobin; reflects liver and bile status.
Why we measure this
Bilirubin reflects both the breakdown of red blood cells and bile drainage. A raised value always deserves interpretation in context.
Bilirubin (conjugated)
Direct fraction; raised when bile drainage is obstructed.
Why we measure this
The direct fraction separates bile drainage problems from other causes of raised bilirubin, which makes targeted follow-up possible.
Albumin
Protein produced by the liver; reflects nutritional status.
Why we measure this
Albumin drops early in undernutrition or chronic illness, often long before other symptoms appear.

The total amount of cholesterol in your blood.
Why we measure this
On its own an unreliable predictor, which is why we always measure it as part of a full lipid profile.
HDL cholesterol
"Good" cholesterol; transports cholesterol back to the liver.

The higher your HDL, the lower your cardiovascular risk. HDL is one of the strongest protective markers we know.
LDL cholesterol
"Bad" cholesterol; raised levels are associated with cardiovascular risk.

Triglycerides
Fat molecule; raised with excess weight and a high sugar intake.

Do I need a referral?
