Blood count and iron
3 biomarkers
Haemoglobin (Hb)

Oxygen transport in the blood.

Why we measure this

Anaemia is an underestimated cause of lost performance and fatigue in athletes.

Iron

Essential for oxygen transport.

Why we measure this

Iron deficiency is common in athletes, particularly women and endurance athletes.

Ferritin

Iron stores; a sensitive indicator of iron status.

Why we measure this

Ferritin often drops before haemoglobin does, revealing a developing iron deficiency early.

Electrolytes and kidney
6 biomarkers
Sodium

Electrolyte; fluid balance and nerve function.

Why we measure this

Fluid-balance disturbances affect endurance and recovery.

Potassium

Electrolyte; heart conduction and muscle function.

Why we measure this

Potassium is essential for muscle and heart function during exercise.

Urea

Protein breakdown product; kidneys and hydration.

Why we measure this

With creatinine it gives insight into hydration and protein load during intensive training.

Creatinine

Kidney function; muscle breakdown product.

Why we measure this

Sometimes higher in athletes due to muscle mass; we combine it with eGFR for correct interpretation.

eGFR

Estimated kidney filtration rate.

Why we measure this

Monitors kidney function, also with high protein and supplement intake.

Magnesium

Muscle function and recovery.

Why we measure this

Intensive training raises magnesium needs; a deficiency gives cramps, poor sleep and slow recovery.

Muscle and recovery
3 biomarkers
AST

Liver and muscle enzyme; cell damage.

Why we measure this

With ALT and CK a measure of muscle load and recovery.

ALT

Liver enzyme.

Why we measure this

Separates liver from muscle load within the recovery picture.

Creatine kinase (CK)

Muscle damage marker; raised after intensive training.

Why we measure this

CK reflects muscle breakdown and recovery; it helps assess whether load and rest are in balance.

Energy and metabolism
3 biomarkers
Glucose (fasting)

Blood sugar after fasting.

Why we measure this

Gives insight into energy metabolism and metabolic risk.

HbA1c

Average blood sugar over ~3 months.

Why we measure this

Shows longer-term sugar status, useful with carbohydrate-rich sports nutrition.

TSH

Pituitary hormone driving the thyroid.

Why we measure this

The thyroid drives metabolism and energy; an abnormality explains unexplained fatigue or weight change.

Hormones and recovery
2 biomarkers
Testosterone

Hormone with a role in muscle building and recovery.

Why we measure this

A sustained high training load can suppress testosterone; measuring it gives insight into your recovery capacity and balance.

Cortisol

Stress hormone; an indicator of overtraining.

Why we measure this

Chronically raised cortisol can point to overtraining or insufficient recovery, often before you notice it.

Vitamins
2 biomarkers
Vitamin D (25-OH)

Bone and muscle function.

Why we measure this

Vitamin D plays a role in muscle strength and bone density; in athletes a deficiency is associated with more injuries.

Vitamin B12

Energy metabolism and blood production.

Why we measure this

B12 is crucial for energy and oxygen transport; deficiencies are more common in plant-based athletes.
