General blood test

General blood test,
a complete picture of your health

Would you like a general or complete blood test without a referral? In a single blood draw you map several organ systems at once, from your blood count to your liver, kidneys, cholesterol and blood sugar. You receive your results with a personal explanation from a doctor. How that works without a referral letter is set out in our guide blood test without a referral.

For a genuinely complete picture we recommend Bloodworks Premium: our most extensive test in a single blood draw. If you are looking for a broad basis, Bloodworks Plus is a good choice.

Our recommendation, most complete

Without a referral

What does a general blood test measure?

A complete blood test combines several groups of blood values. That creates a broad picture and lets a doctor assess your values in relation to one another instead of in isolation.

Blood count

Red and white blood cells and platelets, for a picture of anaemia, immunity and clotting.

Liver

Liver enzymes and bile values that say something about liver function and the drainage of bile.

Kidneys

Creatinine, eGFR and urea, which together reflect the filtering function of the kidneys.

Cholesterol and heart

Total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglycerides as a picture of your cardiovascular risk.

Blood sugar

Glucose and HbA1c for insight into your blood sugar and your risk of diabetes.

Iron

Ferritin and iron, relevant when you are tired or low on energy.

Thyroid

TSH and free T4, which reflect how your thyroid is working.

Vitamins and minerals

Vitamin D and B12 among others, which play a role in energy and general health.

Frequently asked questions about a general blood test

What is a general blood test?

A general or complete blood test maps several organ systems at once in a single blood draw, such as your blood count, liver, kidneys, cholesterol, blood sugar, iron, thyroid and vitamins. That gives you a broad overview of your health instead of one single value.

Can I have a general blood test without a referral?

Yes. At Bloodworks you do not need a referral from your general practitioner. You choose a package online or compose your own test, give blood at an affiliated collection point and receive your results with a personal explanation from a doctor.

What does a complete blood test cost?

That depends on how extensive you want it to be. You either choose a ready-made package or compose your test per marker. The price is stated clearly in advance, including the blood draw and collection costs.

How quickly will I have my results?

Your results are usually available within 2 working days, with a personal interpretation from a doctor. You receive a clear PDF report that you can also share with your general practitioner.
