How to raise your ferritin: what works and what does not

A low ferritin means your iron stores are running low, and then you want one thing: to get them back up. Why the cause matters more than the list of iron-rich foods, what really determines iron absorption and when tablets are and are not sensible.

Medically reviewed by the Bloodworks medical team

In short

  • Low iron stores always have a cause; as long as it persists, you are topping up against the current.
  • Iron from animal sources is absorbed better than iron from plant sources; vitamin C with the meal helps, coffee and tea inhibit absorption.
  • Iron tablets work, but belong with a demonstrated deficiency; too much iron is not harmless.
  • Ferritin rises slowly: re-testing usually only makes sense after a few months.

What you can measure

Not every cause is visible in blood. These are the values that most often explain something.

Recommended test

Recommended when topping up low iron stores

Iron Panel

5 markers

Ferritin alone can be distorted while topping up, for example by inflammation. The panel also measures serum iron, transferrin and the saturation, so you can see whether the stores are truly recovering.

  • Personal assessment by a registered doctor
  • Clear laboratory report, in plain language
  • No referral needed
  • 1000+ blood draw locations

Want to know where you stand first?

The Iron panel measures ferritin together with serum iron, transferrin and the saturation, without a referral and with a doctor’s explanation.

First the cause, then the topping up

Raising ferritin without knowing why it is low is mopping with the tap open. Common explanations are blood loss (such as heavy periods), increased demand (growth, pregnancy, intensive sport), a diet low in absorbable iron or reduced uptake in the gut. Each cause asks for its own approach, and sometimes that includes a visit to your GP.

Unexplained blood loss deserves particular attention. In men and in women after the menopause, low iron stores are rarely a matter of diet; finding out where the iron goes then matters more than topping up. How to recognise a deficiency is covered in Ferritin too low? How to recognise an iron deficiency.

Iron from food: absorption makes the difference

Iron comes in two forms in food. Haem iron, from meat and fish, is absorbed relatively well. Non-haem iron, from plant sources such as legumes, whole grains, nuts and green vegetables, is absorbed less efficiently but counts fully in a varied diet. What you eat and drink alongside matters most:

  • Combine plant-based iron with vitamin C, for example fruit or bell pepper with the meal: that noticeably improves absorption.
  • Drink coffee and tea between meals rather than with them; compounds in them inhibit iron absorption.
  • A lot of calcium with the same meal can also suppress absorption; spreading it across the day helps.

Do not count on a quick jump: with food alone, low stores rise slowly. Food is the foundation, not a sprint.

Iron tablets: sensible with a demonstrated deficiency

With a clear deficiency, supplementation is the fastest route. Do it guided by a measurement and preferably in consultation with a doctor: dose and duration are more precise than the drugstore shelf suggests, and stomach complaints or constipation are common reasons to adjust the intake.

Just as important: do not take iron for long periods as a precaution without a demonstrated deficiency. Your body can hardly get rid of excess iron, and stores that are too high are not harmless.

Do you use medication? Iron can affect the absorption of some medicines, including thyroid medication and certain antibiotics. Do not take them at the same moment and consult your pharmacist when in doubt.

How fast does ferritin rise?

Your body first uses incoming iron for daily consumption, such as making red blood cells, and only then refills the stores. So think in months, not weeks. A common approach is topping up consistently for a few months and then measuring again; measuring earlier mainly shows fluctuations.

How you know it is working

For a check-up, measure under the same circumstances as the first time where possible. And mind one pitfall: inflammation can temporarily raise ferritin, making recovery look better than it is. The iron panel therefore measures transferrin saturation alongside ferritin, so a distorted picture stands out sooner.

Only tracking your ferritin?

The individual ferritin test measures your iron stores, including a doctor’s assessment and a personal report.

Frequently asked questions

How fast can I raise my ferritin?

Slower than most people hope: the body first covers daily consumption and only then refills the stores. Think in months. Re-testing usually only makes sense after a few months, in line with what your doctor advises.

Which foods raise ferritin the fastest?

Iron from meat and fish is absorbed best. Plant sources such as legumes, whole grains and nuts count fully, especially combined with vitamin C at the meal. Just as important is what you leave out: coffee or tea with the meal inhibits absorption.

Can I raise ferritin without tablets?

With a mild deficiency and an addressable cause, yes, with patience and a diet geared towards absorption. With a clear deficiency, food alone often takes too long; supplementation guided by a measurement is then the usual route.

When should I see my GP about this?

With unexplained blood loss, with persistent complaints, when your ferritin stays low despite a proper approach, and in any case for men and post-menopausal women with an unexplained low ferritin. The cause should be investigated first.

Contact your GP if you notice black or bloody stools, unintended weight loss or blood loss without a clear explanation. That should be assessed before you top up a deficiency yourself.

Where do you give blood?

You can give blood at collection points across the Netherlands, usually without an appointment.

Find a collection point near you or read how a blood draw works.
