Frequently asked questions
Will this test tell me the cause of my anaemia?
Not always. Anaemia has varied causes, from a shortage of iron, vitamin B12 or folate to blood loss, chronic inflammation or a bone marrow condition. This test covers the most common causes and gives direction, but there are situations where blood testing alone is not enough and further assessment by your GP is needed.
How does this differ from Anaemia Extended?
Extended contains everything in Basic and adds kidney function plus values that can point to accelerated breakdown of red blood cells. That is mainly useful when anaemia has already been established or when an earlier test gave no explanation. Extended also passes the 225 euro threshold, so the blood draw fee is waived.
Do I need to fast?
Fasting is not required for this test. If you take iron tablets, please mention this during the intake: they can temporarily affect the iron values.
Why does a anaemia test include CRP?
Longer standing inflammation can itself cause anaemia and at the same time push ferritin up. Without CRP, a normal ferritin could then be falsely reassuring. CRP helps read the iron status correctly.
