Anaemia Extended

For a fuller assessment with known anaemia, previously abnormal values or an unclear cause. Beyond everything in Basic, this test looks at kidney function and at signs of accelerated breakdown of red blood cells.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Will this test tell me the cause of my anaemia?

More often than the basic test, but not always. Anaemia has varied causes and some cannot be shown by blood testing. This package covers the most common causes plus two lines of enquiry missing from Basic: kidney function and accelerated breakdown of red blood cells. If the cause remains unclear, further assessment should go through your GP.

What do LDH, bilirubin and haptoglobin add?

Those three look at the same question from three sides: are red blood cells breaking down faster than normal. LDH and bilirubin can then rise, while haptoglobin falls. Together they give an indication that no single value can give. It remains an indication, not a diagnosis.

Why is kidney function included?

The kidneys produce the hormone that prompts the bone marrow to make red blood cells. Reduced kidney function can therefore cause anaemia that iron or vitamins do not explain.

Do I pay a blood draw fee?

No. This test is above the 225 euro threshold, so the one-off blood draw fee of 29 euro is waived. You pay 229 euro in total.

Do I need to fast?

Fasting is not required for this test. If you take iron tablets, please mention this during the intake: they can temporarily affect the iron values.
